Red mangrove roots arch across thousands of Sonneratia alba mangrove root spikes snorkeling up through a mudflat in Kosrae Island, Micronesia. Intricate both above and below ground, mangrove roots hold the plants upright in sodden soil, supply them with air when the tide rises, and, in some species, even remove salt from seawater.
