An arctic fox pup awakens from a nap on the summer-greened Canadian tundra. Most arctic foxes turn white in winter to blend with their snowy surroundings, though some, called blue foxes, wear a brownish-blue coat. These delicate-looking mammals have adapted a host of physical attributes—short ears; a short muzzle; thick fur—to help them bear up under some of Earth's harshest living conditions.
